Spitfire IIa P7371 was flown by Sgt Plt Robert A. ‘Bob’ Beardsley on 41 Squadron’s first operation with its new Spitfire IIa’s on 25 October 1940, when he claimed one Me 109E destroyed and one damaged, but sustained combat damage himself in the action. He was the last Battle of Britain pilot to leave the Squadron, on 16 October 1941, having been with the unit for exactly 13 months by that time. Beardsley ended the War as a Flight Lieutenant with a Distinguished Flying Cross, having claimed three destroyed, four probably destroyed and five damaged enemy aircraft.
