Spitfire Ia X4021 was the aircraft flown by F/O Lovell on 15 August 1940, when the Luftwaffe launched its largest daylight raid yet on the north of England. Despite a stoppage in a starboard machine gun, he claimed one Me 110 destroyed and a second probably destroyed. Although he had previously shared two victories, these were his first individual victories; many more would follow. Lovell ended the War as a Wing Commander with two DSOs, two DFCs, and an American DFC, and had been granted 16 and six shared destroyed, two probably destroyed and nine and four shared damaged enemy aircraft. Sadly, he was killed in a flying accident on 17 August 1945, aged just 26.
