This aircraft was flown by Flt Lt Norman Ryder when he claimed the Squadron’s first individual victory of the War, a Heinkel He 111H of KG 26, 15 miles northeast of Whitby on 3 April 1940. However, he was shot down by return fire from the bomber and ditched in the North Sea, but he and the bomber’s five crew were all rescued and brought ashore.
