This aircraft, Chance-Vought F4U-1A Corsair BuNo 17740, has long been associated
to 28-victory ace Major Gregory “Pappy” Boyington, Medal of Honor recipient, due to a
series of photos taken on 4 December 1943 at Vella Lavella.
