Lancaster Mk III type 464 provisioning, W/C Guy Gibson, No 617 Squadron RAF, Operation Chastise, 16 May 1943

Operation Chastise took place during the night of 16-17 May 1943 and was meant to destroy dams in the industrial Rühr region. Bouncing bombs designed by Barnes Wallis were dropped by specially-modified Lancasters led by Guy Gibson, and succeeded in breaching two of the three dams. Gibson was awarded the Victoria Cross for his part in the raid.

Avro Lancaster B Mk III type 464 provisioning
Flown by Wg Cdr Guy Gibson, the legendary commanding officer of 617 Squadron, Lancaster ED932 / AJ-G was part of the first wave and the first to attack the Möhne Dam. Although its mine fell short of the dam and failed to breach it, Gibson led the remaining aircraft of the squadron in destroying the Eder dam and caused some damage on the Sorpe dam. He was awarded the Victoria Cross shortly after the raid. He was killed flying a Mosquito on 19 September 1944.
