The successful Operation Taxable was designed to create the illusion that a large invasion force was headed for the beaches of the Seine Maritime, thus distracting German forces from the actual landing in Normandy. Heavy bombers were required to fly a very precise pattern at low altitude near the French coast, dropping chaff at regular intervals to simulate the radar echo of an advancing fleet.

“The Dambusters”
No 617 Squadron RAF
Operation Taxable
5-6 June 1944
Avro Lancaster B Mk III
Flown by Squadron Leader John Leslie Munro, Lancaster B Mk II LM482 was one of the aircraft of the legendary No 617 Squadron “Dambusters” which took part in Operation Taxable, designed to create the illusion that a large invasion force was headed for the beaches of the Seine Maritime, thus distracting German forces from the actual landing in Normandy. The heavy bombers were required to fly a very precise pattern at low altitude near the French coast, dropping chaff at regular intervals to simulate the radar echo of an advancing fleet. The deception proved effective: combined with Operation Glimmer, an equivalent operation in the Dover Straits, the operation successfully led the German to send their forces to the wrong places, thereby contributing to Operation Overlord’s success.
