302nd Fighter Squadron, 332nd Fighter Group
First Lieutenant Gwynne Peirson became famous when machine-gun fire from his aircraft destroyed the German TA-22 minelayer in the Trieste Harbour on June 9, 1944. Peirson and his wingman, Wendell Pruitt, were awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for this action. The 332nd Fighter Group, now remembered as the “Tuskegee Airmen”, was based in Ramitelli, Italy, at the time.
