Lancaster Mk III type 464 provisioning, S/L Young, No 617 Squadron RAF, Opération Chastise, 16 mai 1943

L'opération Chastise se déroula dans la nuit du 16 au 17 mai 1943 et visait les barrages de la Rühr. Pour détruire les barrages, des Lancaster spécialement modifiés lancèrent à basse altitude des bombes rebondissantes. Le raid aboutit à la destruction de deux des trois barrages visés et valut la Victoria Cross à Guy Gibson, le commandant du 617 Squadron "Dam Busters".

Avro Lancaster B Mk III type 464 provisioning
Flown by S/L H. M. Young, Lancaster ED887 / AJ-A was part of the first wave of the attack and the fourth aircraft to attack the Möhne Dam. Its mine was dropped accurately and caused a small breach in the dam, which collapsed after the following aircraft, flown by F/L Maltby, scored another well-aimed hit. On its return flight, the aircraft was shot down crossing the Dutch coast near Ijmuiden, and crashed into the sea killing all on board.
