C-46 “Commando”
Curtiss C-46A-CU s/n 41-5159, first production C-46
built in Buffalo, New York
US Army Air Forces, May 1942
The first production Curtiss C-46 Commando was serial number 41-5159, rolling out of the Curtiss plant in Buffalo, New York in May 1942. It was delivered to the US Army Air Forces on 12 July 1942 and was soon sent back to the factory for 53 immediate modifications along with the following 29 production aircraft. Eventually the Commando matured and solved its teething problems to become an important part of the American transport fleet. Some 3,181 C-46 were produced and many still fly nowadays, as preserved aircraft and even as commercial aircraft.
